reflection on separation process ii

Chapter 1 : Crystallization

What that I have learn in this chapter at first is the definition of the crystilization itself which is the formation of particle which solute molecule solution are transformed into solid. I also learn about the structure of the crystal that been divided to 7 types of basic structures. Literally, I have already prepared with the materials that been given before coming to the class so that I can still remember and easy to understand more during the jigsaw activities. Other than that, we also do some discussion about the benefits and disadvantages of the crystallizer. For the better understanding, I have tried to ask questions and some discussions. As far as I know, the activities in the class is more or less helping me to adapt in new ways of study and help me gain more interesting idea as it also made me think out of the box.

Chapter 2 : Adsorption

The process of adsorption is widely been applied in many industries such as gas separation industries, water treatment, chromatography and more. I never thought that we use adsorption to filter the unwanted smell particle in water and gas. I also learn about the physisorption and chemisorption. This make me realised that adsorption occurs in many ways. Other than that, I remember that we learn about graph which show me the mass transfer zone, height of used and unused bed, breakpoint time and many more. The topic that I like the most is the calculation part as I think it is interesting and fun. However I need to work harder as some of the calculation is a bit confusing such as the adsorption isotherm.

Chapter 3 : Ion Exchange

Out of all the chapter I have learn that I think that is the most challenging is the ion exchange. In this chapter, I have learn about the differences of ion exchange and adsorption. I also learn on how to solve problems that related to ion exchange in term of exchange capacity and equilibrium relation as well as the scale up of ion exchange. This chapter is the most challenging because it take me days to understand this chapter. I need to go through every things  one by one and I also search youtube to get more understanding as there are lots of educational video that help me to understand more about this chapter.

Chapter 4  : Membrane Separation

Membrane is very interesting topic. The end of the class, I can describe the theories that involve membrane process, the factor affecting the membrane and its operations and I also think that I can solve the problem related to liquid permeation and gas permeation (complete mixing and cross flow model). I also can evaluate the performance of reverse osmosis and ultrafiltration system.

Other than that, in class we do some question which really help me to get the better understanding on this topic. I think that, do lots of questions really help me a lot.

Chapter  5 : Evaporation

Evaporation is a process that we have been study for a while. In class, I have learn on how to explain what is evaporation process is, design the evaporation method for evaporator, perform the mass and heat balance for single and multiple effect evaporator, I also can analyse the effect of parameter and design the condensers for evaporators as well as we have discuss about the using of evaporators in industries nowday. This chapter help to give a clear perception on evaporation and how evaporators works. It also help me to more understand with separation process as it is more likely to have some kind of connection with all the topic that I have learnt

Chapter  6 : Drying

Drying is one of the most exciting chapter for me as there are many application of drying that I just now discovered in class. We not only discovered about application of drying, I also have learn about how the drying equipment works, what is humidity, the term of dew and wet point, and also learn how to read the psychrometric chart. I also learn about the adiabatic saturation temperature, and also on how to calculate and solves questions. For me this chapter is very interesting as I can see that there are not only one type of temperature but also wet bulb temperature and also dry bulb temperature. I have studied the different between these temperature and also to calculate the humidity.
