Problem Based Learning

PBL stands for problem based learning which we learnt by solving the problem given. We also had been given some materials such as journals, manuscript and also videos of chapter 6-Multiple Reaction in order to complete the task. This PBL contains two parts which were reaction process and separation process.

The question given was designing a pilot scale plant
for the production of 30 000 ton/year of hydrogen via steam reforming of methane. AURUM proposed the use of membrane reactor, which is claimed to make the process reacting and separating the product efficiently in the same unit.

Hydrogen gas can be produced via steam reforming of methane as follows:
                                                  CH4 + 2H2O à CO2 + 4H2
However, this is only a overall reaction, of which there are other side reactions that must be taken into consideration.

AURUM is currently looking to hire a team of interns who are up to a new challenge, passionate and skillful to design a membrane reactor, which is able to maximize the yield and selectivity of H2 and favour for steam reforming of methane. The reactor design shall specify the following:

i) Type of the membrane used
ii) Type of the catalyst used
iii) Description of how the chosen membrane works for the steam reforming of methane
iv) The strategy to maximize the selectivity & yield of H2 and minimize the side reaction
v) The sizing of the membrane reactor designed
