reflection on separation process ii
Chapter 1 : Crystallization
I have already prepared with the materials that been given before coming to the class. So, basically i have the ideas about what i am going to learn today. We did jigsaw activities which we were asked to form a group and each group got one type of crystallizer and basically we discussed how the crystallizer actually works and what the benefits and disadvantages of that particular crystallizer. Moreover, we also draw the crystallizer on the paper and basically can understand more about it. After that, we explained what we already discussed to my home group and the other team mates also explained about the other type of crystallizers. So that, i have a better understanding regarding this chapter. However, there are still certain things that i doubt off since i did not know either the explanations were true or not, so i need better explanation from lecturer in future. I scared that what i explained to my team mates was wrong.
Furthermore, during the class today, i learned about the six type of separation and i explained regarding evaporation process. The thing that i improved from this learning was i gain more confident to present in front of other members and also i love the great teamwork among us. :)
Chapter 2 : Adsorption
In adsorption chapter, i have learnt about the material balance on adsorbate, the application of adsorption, the interaction and the selective criteria of the adsorbent. The topic that i like the most is scale up design method as it is interesting topic and i can imagine how actually the separation through adsorption works and the topic that i least understanding is equilibrium relation of adsorbent.
For adsorption class basically lecturer did explained about the processes. Then, we solve the tutorials questions. We did several questions and basically i can see the pattern of the questions. The questions really help me during the test and i have better understanding after solve the problem.
To be honest, during the first week of class, i really did not like this kind of active learning and i complained about it a lot like i said 'conservative learning is the way much more better compared to this active learning'. But then, after go through this learning style, i love it as i can understand better and even i can gain my confident level to present in front of others. It was like kill birds with one stone. Thank you so much and i am looking forward to the next activities. ;)
Chapter 3 : Ion Exchange
In this chapter, basically we learnt about how ion exchange is actually differs from adsorption. From what i understood, ion exchange is similar to adsorption, it just that ion exchange has cation exchange. In ion exchane we learnt about the applications of ion exchange in the industries, the properties of synthetic resins, water softening , equilibrium relations, the selectivity and affinity which is the increasing in selectivity will have the better separation and finally we learnt scale up design method.

Lecture did explain everything about how actually ion exchange normally works and we were asked to work in pair to solve the problems. What I noticed was to answer the problem for ion exhange is normally similar to adsorption. Therefore, i just need to recap back what i have learnt in that chapter and applied it in this chapter. Lecturer also assists us to solve the problem.

Chapter 4 : Membrane Separation
In this chapter, as we came to class, we were asked to sit in group. We discussed about the topic and voice out about what we understand from this chapter as we already learnt by ourselves before coming to the class. Basically, we learnt the defination of membrane itself, the important terms in membrane, transport mechanism, type of membrane such as microporous and non-porousm the example of applications of membrane, the significat part which is the criteria for performance assessment on how the selectivity affect the permeability. Then, baiscally there are two applications for the membrane which are in gas phase and liquid phase.

Then, we did some questions regarding this and discussed among team members. Finally we were given an assignment regarding this chapter and the previous one to assist us regarding what we have learnt.
Chapter 5 : Evaporation
In the first lecture of evaporation chapter, i learnt what is actually evaporation process by definition. then, we were asked to form a group of five to six students to discuss regarding the factors that effect the evaporation process. Each group were assigned one topic each to be explained in the front. In my group we were discussed on how solubility can affect the evaporation. It was like peer teaching when the representative of each group need to briefly explained regarding each topic and at the same time the lecturer facilitate us by correcting us if anything wrong. We basically learnt about single effect evaporator which divided into two conditions which are dilute solution and concentrated solution. Concentrated solution when the weightage is more than 10% and we need also to consider the boiling point rise in order to calculate the enthalpy and so on and for the multiple effect evaporators which are dividing into two parts, first forward feed and second backward feed.
Then, we did examples for each of the sub topic. In the next class, we were given tutorial questions regarding evaporation. All of us were assigned to stay in a group and need to provide solution for a particular question. After that, all of use sent it the answers for lecturer to correct it through schoology.
I think the tutorial questions helped me a lot for me to have a better undrstanding in this chapter. Practise makes perfect anyway. I hope after this, lecturer can give more examples or final exam questions in order for us to prepare for final examination.
Chapter 6 : Drying
In this chapter what we did was basically we are having lectures as usual. Then, we did some examples in each sub topic of this chapter in the class and also there are some videos that are povided and from there, we need to answer some questions on drying by ourselves in the schoology.

Drying is actually the removal small amount of water or other liquid from solid material. And there are two methods of drying and some pgysical conditions must be followed in order to achieve drying process. Besides, there are also we need to refer to humidity chart and terms like dry bult and wet bulb temperature, rate of drying in the constant rate period and so on.

Overall, i understood this chapter very well and as usual , some exercises need to be provided for me to look into the pattern of the questions in order for me to understand better and for my final examinations.

Thank you ;)
